Monday mix
January 9th, 2012Today I have three things for you that I’ve been listening to a lot. None of which sounds like the other
The first track I’m bringing you is by a group called AfroCubism which is collaboration between Cuban and Malian musicians.
This next track by Heavens to Betsy tells the story of a girl who died from performing a self abortion (presumably before abortions were legal in the US).
Baby’s Gone – Heavens to Betsy
And lastly I’ll leave you with a track from one of my favorite hip hop groups Dead Prez. Here’s an excerpt from this song:
Bring the power back to the street where the people live
I’m sick of working for crumbs and filling up the prisons
Dying over money and relying on religion
For help. We do for self like ants in a colony
Organize the wealth into a socialist economy
A way of life based off the common need
And all my comrades are ready
We just spreading the seed
as always if you are the artist or you represent the artist in anyway and you’d like me to remove these tracks I am happy to do so.
Holiday crafternoons..
December 31st, 2011In preparation for the holidays I spent several days crafting gifts. I made flower bouquets from ribbons and sticks, a set of place mats for my cousin, books with secret compartments from old books I found at our peddlers mall, a Frida Kahlo piece for my mom, and a decoupaged suit case full of dress up clothes for my cousins little girls. It took a solid week of crafting but it was well worth it. Everyone loved their gifts!
Oh my goth.
December 22nd, 2011Monday mix
December 12th, 2011So for today’s mix I’d like to share with you my favorite Cursive song:
This past Saturday I co-DJ’d with my partner Jack at WRFL 88.1 from 10pm to midnight. We were filling in for Los who does the revolutionary radio program which is an all hip hop block show. We wanted to honor the format of the show so I got to dig around through my hip hop collection. One of my favorites is Dead Prez. Their song police state feels super relevant with whats happening in this country with the various occupations and what not.

Monday mix (the Wednesday addition)
December 7th, 2011For new years eve I’m headed to the Southgate House for a rockin’ punk show. I’m especially excited to see Dear Landlord play that night. They’re from Carbondale Illinois and in my opinion, pretty great.
Digging a little deeper into my collection today I found My Zap Mama album A Ma Zone. I first learned about this amazing band in 1999. The lead singer is from Belgium with roots in the Democratic Republic of Congo. She blends electronic, African rhythms, R&b and funk in a really fun way. Here is one of my favorites.
Another deep cut from my collection is from the Venezuelan Ska band, Desorden Publico. I picked up their album Diablo while I was in Miami visiting my grandmother back in 20o1. I had never heard of them before but the cover art was fun so I took a chance. Boy was I pleasantly surprised! First of all, they’re fun as hell, and they’re blending of traditional ska rhythms with afro-Venezuelan beats is the shit. They’re lyrics are also often pretty political which if course if a plus for me. These guys aren’t all serious all of the time though – the song that I picked to share is about eating tasty food.
Enjoy!

Monday mix
November 28th, 2011I’ve been listening to a lot of new and old music recently so I think I might try to share what I’ve been listening to once a week. We’ll call it the Monday mix.
I’ve been at a local coffee shop for about three hours today working on stuff and listening to Patti Smith’s album Outside Society. She is amazing. This album is amazing. Honestly, I can’t say enough about it. I’m not a music reviewer and I’m not gonna try to be one either. Just know that this album stands the test of time. Here’s a sample:

I’ve also been on a big Cuban hip hop kick lately. I’ll probably be sharing a lot of my Cuban music collection in the coming weeks, especially as I prepare for my trip to La Habana. I’ll kick you off with a song from one of my new favorite groups Las Krudas Cubensi. Las Krudas are an all female, lesbian rap group from Havana (although I read recently that they’ve relocated to Austin?!). This next song titled Gorda, is about the need to love your body no matter the size. One of the lyrics that stuck out to me was when she calls out the irony of people dying from anorexia while people are dying from war.

photos with the new camera
November 18th, 2011New camera!!
November 16th, 2011So I’m super excited because I found this Nikon D80 on ebay for only $300! It works great and it came with a lens and all the original cords manuals etc. I really wanted to be able to take a nice camera with me to Cuba in January and now I totally can.
And in other news I found a one piece jump suit thing at the peddlers mall and had to get it. Yes, I have worn this in public.
I’m writing a cookbook!
October 26th, 2011I am writing a Cuban vegan cookbook. Above is the video that I made for my kickstarter (please please ignore the ridiculous still of my face). For more information about my project and how you can support it click here.

To All:
I want to thank all of you for your efforts and dedication to Human Rights and Human Kindness, in the past year I have experienced such emotion, joy, sadness and never ending faith. It is because of all of you that I am alive today, as I
look at my sister Martina I am marveled by the love she has for me and of course I worry about her and her health, but as she tells me she is the eldest and she will not back down from this fight to save my life and prove to the world that I am innocent of this terrible crime.
As I look at my mail from across the globe, from places I have never ever dreamed I would know about and people speaking languages and expressing cultures and religions I could only hope to one day see first hand. I am humbled by the emotion that fills my heart with overwhelming, overflowing Joy. I can’t even explain the insurgence of emotion I feel when I try to express the strength I draw from you all, it compounds my faith and it shows me yet again that this is not a case about the death penalty, this is not a case about Troy Davis, this is a case about Justice and the Human Spirit to see Justice prevail.
I cannot answer all of your letters but I do read them all, I cannot see you all but I can imagine your faces, I cannot hear you speak but your letters take me to the far reaches of the world, I cannot touch you physically but I feel your warmth everyday I exist.
So Thank you and remember I am in a place where execution can only destroy your physical form but because of my faith in God, my family and all of you I have been spiritually free for some time and no matter what happens in the days, weeks to come, this Movement to end the death penalty, to seek true justice, to expose a system that fails to protect the innocent must be accelerated. There are so many more Troy Davis’. This fight to end the death penalty is not won or lost through me but through our strength to move forward and save every innocent person in captivity around the globe. We need to dismantle this Unjust system city by city, state by state and country by country.
I can’t wait to Stand with you, no matter if that is in physical or spiritual form, I will one day be announcing,
“I AM TROY DAVIS, and I AM FREE!”
Never Stop Fighting for Justice and We will Win!
————————————————————————————————————————————–
I am so sick about this right now. It’s hard to hold back the tears and the rage. I’m going to try to find strength in his message and keep fighting. – Ondine
